    Explore the Mehriz County

    Mehriz County

Mehriz County is located on the foot of Mount Shirkooh , some 35 kilometers to the south east of the city of Yazd . It was ordered to be built by Mehrnegar, daughter of Anushīrwān the Just, - the Sassanid emperor - about 16 centuries ago. Despite its vicinity to the desert, Mehriz enjoys a moderate weather, and has resisted the dryness of the area thanks to its several qanats (underground aqueduct), and water springs originating from the surrounding mountains. Because of the burning heat of the sun in this region, several architectural innovations were designed. The houses have been designed in a way that one side of them has higher walls so that the lodgers can be sheltered under the shadow. Moreover, the houses are usually built some steps lower than the ground to keep the rooms cooler in the summer.
Among the most famous attractions in Mehriz, some of them are noticeable: Saryazd Castle, Mehrpadin village, Zeyn o-din, Aliabad caravanserais, and Pahlavan Pour garden.

    Highlights

    • Saryazd Castle
    • Mehrpadin Village
    • Zeyn o-din Caravanserai
    • Aliabad Caravanserai

Saryazd castle is one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in this region. The castle was built in the Sassanid era and was not used for military purposes, rather it was used for storing food, gold and jewelries. The castle is surrounded with a two-meter-high wall that goes round the castle. Additionally, a moat of 5 to 6-meter depth has been dug around the castle. The castle has ramparts and fences which are interspersed with 8 to 9-meter height watch-towers.

The historical village of Mehrpadin, on the south west of Mehriz, houses many architectural and natural attractions – from the 1500-year-old cedar in Mongabad neighborhood, and historical stone castle of Don Gaon near Baghdad Abad to the Jame mosque and its flanking mausoleum.

The village is nearly as old as Mehriz itself. The 13th-century Jame mosque of Mehrpadin, is a valuable historical site in Mehriz, with widespread summer and winter spaces and a long minaret adorned by mosaic tile inscription. Its floor is covered by an old carpet woven about 223 years ago. Adjacent to the mosque, seats another 13th –century structure named Koshteh Khaneh Mausoleum (the murdered house). The place was called so since locals believe that during the Mongol invasion, a considerable crowd came to this building seeking refuge, but they were massacred by the Mongols. The original ruined building was renovated in 1963.

Built in the Safavid era and contemporary with Ganjali khan bathhouse in Kerman, this circular caravanserai is a rare example of its kind. Located on the Silk Road, this is a charming mud-brick structure with five connected watch towers, and a round courtyard in the middle which is surrounded by chambers. The caravanserai has been renovated and converted to a traditional guest house. Here you can stay and enjoy the romantic ambience of the desert with its fascinating starry night sky.

On the road to Harat, about 55 kilometers to the south west of Mehriz, there is a 4000- square meter caravanserai in Aliabad village. This strong structure was commissioned by “Mohammad Vali Mirza”, son of the Qajarid king, Fathali Shah. It is a square building with four watch towers on each corner.
